With more and more people working from home, they suddenly realize that it requires a lot of discipline to finish tasks on time.  If just starting now, it takes time to find your groove, but it will be easier by following simple tips to maintain a good work-life balance, establish personal and work boundaries, and take care of yourself and your family. There are many benefits of working from home with a flexible schedule, seeing more of your children to and much more.  But if easily lured by procrastination and other numerous distractions that can hamper your work and productivity, you are in deep trouble.  If working from home, either part-time or full-time, you must plan it thoroughly.  Some tips for successful work from home and remaining productive are given below.Top of FormBottom of Form

A work-space is essential.  If you lack an exclusive room for a home office, the kitchen table can be your office-space. Opening your laptop after plopping down on the couch in front of the television may present distractions.  Your home office should have everything you need, like an extra phone-line, a landline or a Skype account for instant contact.  A comfortable desk, chair, and computer ensures proper work -norms, but must not tempt slacking-off.

Set aside long time periods for work

Working from home ensures very flexible hours, but if interrupted constantly, it would be hard to get work done.  Ensure setting aside some large blocks of time.  For eight hours of work, set aside three blocks of three hours, two hours, and another three hours.  To run errands or take care of essentials, attend to them outside the time blocks available during breaks.

Being at home 24/7 will drive anyone crazy.  Going outside is a great opportunity to go for a walk to clear your head, and get revived.

Create to-do lists for daily tasks

It’s easy to be off-track while working from home, but a daily checklist to be done will help you track your progress.  People have found this to be very helpful, and if you are slacking off, lack of progress is clearly visible and set right.

Minimize distractions and set on-line limits

If your work is on a computer, you probably understand the internet distractions available, or in some cases, even their pets become distractions. It’s easy to immerse yourself on Facebook or other sites if you keep it on your browser tabs all day. Check in these sites before starting work and during breaks.  During work time, close all non-work related tabs and websites.

Don’t procrastinate

Maintain daily to-do lists and actually do those. Don’t do 90% of it and say that the remaining work can be done later. This creates a cycle of procrastinating things off to another day that is very hard to get rid of. There are days when emergencies interrupt your work, as there would be at the office each day. If you are lagging behind, it really can put you back, further.

Take care of yourself

Have a good breakfast to keep you working even when hungry, and schedule a short lunch break.  Some ensure dressing up as if they were driving to work.  You may not wear a suit, but casual dresses and no sweatpants and T-shirts, might ensure better task-orientation. Scheduling lunch dates to maintain social connections outside your residence.
